Welcome to Windrift Australian Shepherds. We are located in the Northern California Wine Country town of Sebastopol, which is about 1 hour north of San Francisco.
I have had dogs all my life and began actively showing
dogs as a teenager in 1972. My first breeds were Belgian
Tervuren and Golden Retrievers. I did extremely well in
both breeds, however, found myself searching for a temperament
which is a combination of the two breeds. In 1993, I was
given my first Australian Shepherd by Sheila Polk (Tri-Ivory)
and was totally hooked! I now only have Aussies and always
will. The Australian Shepherd is definitely the breed for
me.
What I like about Aussies is their intelligence, versatility,
beauty and of course, their delightful even temperament.
Contrary to what you may read, not all Aussies need a job.
They do need a loving family where they actually become
a member. They do not do well as a “backyard dog”.
Over the years, I have been very successful in the show
ring in conformation and obedience. I have produced many champions and
was even ranked #5 nationwide in obedience in 1985. I raise,
train, groom and generally handle my own dogs. This is
part of the reward in winning.
Keeping a relatively small number of adult dogs and a
puppy or two to be potential show dogs keeps me busy. I
also have nearly a full time job as a pharmacist, which
is where I derive my income to support the dogs.
I generally have just one or
two litters a year. The primary reason for having
a litter is my motivation to create the bloodline which
is uniquely Windrift. I keep what I feel will be an asset
to my breeding program and the remainder of the puppies
are placed in loving family homes with a limited (not
for breeding) AKC/ASCA registration.
Breeding dogs should not be taken lightly and I take puppy
raising very seriously. My puppies are not kennel raised.
All puppies are well socialized and exposed to many different
situations. They are familiar with riding in cars, people
and other animals (primarily cats). I take great care to
give my puppies a great start in life! I especially feel
much satisfaction when families come to pick up their
new addition. Not everyone is cut out for puppy raising,
but it gives me special joy.
